The Very Best Lolcats of 2008

I have followed lolcats at least since May 2007 when Slate published a photo essay about this strange Internet phenomenon.  I soon started sharing them regularly with friends, and the catch phrases and cute animal faces have cracked us up many times.

Ryan encouraged me to review the year in lolcats, so I have, and I present for you my favorites from 2008.  Since I didn’t make a list last year, and there were so many gems from 2007, I hope to post another list soon.  Enjoy.

Many thanks to I Can Has Cheezburger for the images.

Sometimes I don’t find a picture to be particularly cute, but the saying that accompanies it seeps into everyday life. Such is the case here. Also, you will notice a theme: some of my favorite lolcats aren’t even cats.

There are other times when a cat in a photo looks so absolutely insane that the caption doesn’t really matter. This cat really looks like he has the flu.

I truly enjoy the lolcats related to tech support, not just because I can share them with Teddy, but because they capture my frustration with technology. I empathize with this kitty.

“I dropped mah cooky” inspires a deep voice and is fun to say. Thus, it has entered the cultural lexicon of our household. This would be funnier if that cat was a few pounds heavier.

And finally, the top lolcat of 2008…and it’s a raccoon. An impossibly cute raccoon. In the words of Mat Morgan: “how did they get a raccoon in that pose? one of the great mysteries of our time.”
